Kevin escapes to a neighbors home, calls 911, and believes that he is now safe. Kevin wakes up and is confused, yet thrilled that his wish came true. Under those circumstances, it is not before long that the fearful robbers will knock at Kevin's door, keen on cleaning out the empty residence. Once he realizes they've left him home by himself, Kevin learns to fend for himself, and eventually has to protect his house against bumbling burglars Harry and Marv, who are planning to rob every house in Kevin's suburban Chicago neighborhood. In a rush to make their flight, the family miscounts, and no one notices that Kevin has been left behind. Nobody ever said being eight years old was easy, especially when you are a middle child in a very large family. Kevin's mother Kate is frantic when she realizes that she and the family have unintentionally left Kevin behind in Chicago, and she tries to make it back to Chicago as fast as she can, getting help from a polka band leader named Gus Polinski.

Kevin also notices outside the window that Marley is with his family, Marley and Kevin wave at each other and smile. On Christmas Eve, Kevin overhears Harry and Marv's plan to break into his home. The two speak, and Kevin learns that his neighbor is a nice man, estranged from his family. During the night, heavy winds cause damage to power lines, which causes the alarm clocks to reset; consequently, the family oversleeps. McAllister family held a holiday to Florida. In outright chaos, the McCallister family prepares to spend Christmas with extended family in Paris. Running a muck through the house, as many unsupervised eight year old boys would do, Kevin raids Buzz's room, watches 'R' rated movies, eats junk food, and jumps on the beds. Kate ends up accepting a ride with a Gus Polinski John Candy and his Polka Band.
Once in the air, Kate realizes that it was not just closing the garage door that they had forgotten, she realizes that they had forgotten Kevin. Kevin leaves the choir performance and heads home to protect his home from The Wet Bandits. Unfortunately, Kevin makes mistake when he goes plane to New York. After an argument with his older brother Buzz Devin Ratray , Kevin finds himself published and sent to sleep in the third floor bedroom. . .
